Itinerary
Day 01: Drive from Dehradun/ Haridwar/ Rishikesh to Joshimath 09 Hrs/ 275 Kms in a small vehicle.
We pass the towns of Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar, Karanprayag, Nandprayag, Chamoli, Pipalkoti and Helang. Stay in Hotel.
Day 02: Joshimath to Ruing village via Jumma 02 Hrs/ 47 Kms.
We get packed for the trek and after last minute purchases of items required for the trek we leave Joshimath after breakfast, by vehicle. We pass the villages of Tapovan, Reni, Lata, Suraithota, Phagti and reach Jumma a small village on the Joshimath to Malari highway. Little ahead we cross the Dhauliganga over the bridge and drive up to the Ruing village. We can stay at the village or we move up further to a small camping ground 3 kms from the village on the trail to Dunagiri. Let the local guide decide on the location of the camp. The place has two distinct advantages, one we get closer to Dunagiri and it would be easy to negotiate the herculean climb through the landslide and second this place has a nearby stream so a good natural place to camp. Stay in tents.
Day 03: Ruing village to Dunagiri 06 Hrs.
If we had camped at the Ruing village then the trek starts today. The construction of the road to Dunagiri village is undergoing and walking is a bit difficult at some places. Once on the trail it is fun and the trail moves up slowly through the jungle. We pass the camping ground and thereafter the climb to Dunagiri starts. The distance is 08 Kms to the village but it is a tiring walk and needs to be taken at an easy pace with stops as and when one feels tired. After the climb through the land slide zone visible from a distance we are quite near to the village and soon will be on a cemented path, and the houses of the village come into view. However, do not underestimate this path. It is about a Km long and it is quite a tiring walk. Once at the village it’s the end of the days trek. Stay in Hotel/ tents.
Day 04: Dunagiri village to Boulders Camp 06 Hrs.
The day starts with a small climb to the village and then we cross over the ridge to the other side where the Dunagiri gad is flowing. The trail goes down to the gad and we cross it over a concrete bridge. After crossing the bridge we move on the trail going to our right. There is a trail going to the left which goes over the Kanari Khal (4151M), visible from the village ridge and Kalla Khal (4508M) to Malari (3021M). A trail goes down before we climb up to Kalla Khal to Ruing village. However, it’s a separate trek and for present we concentrate over our trail to Bagini glacier. The trail initially traverses the mountain on our left. Slowly but surely we are moving into the glacial, moraine region. We have to walk carefully. Climbing slowly we reach the camping ground before the boulder region. We will not be stopping here as it is very close to the village and next day will become very strenuous. We keep moving ahead and reach a camping site with very big boulders. We continue moving ahead and enter the boulder region. Another hour’s climb brings us to a camping site amidst the boulder and we will stop here for the night. Stay in tents.
Day 05: Boulders Camp to Bagini Camp 05 Hrs.
After breakfast we leave for the next camp, which is next to the Bagini glacier. The walk through the boulders continues and we can see the ridge in front of us where we have to reach and somewhere to its left we will be setting our camp. The views of the Bagini glacier to our right are stunning and terrifying, though we have nothing to worry about as we are not moving onto the glacier. After one and half hours of walk we reach a place which is like camping ground and as we look up towards our left we see the Garur peak. It’s a good place to sit and relax for some time. Once clear of the boulder region we move onto the alpine meadow and slow enjoying the scenery we reach our camping site, in another hour’s time. Stay in tents.
Day 06: Bagini Camp
Having taken trouble to come this far we will not rush back. Today we will stay put in the same camp, though we will go to the higher view point, where a small cairn stands to get a good view of the mountains surrounding us as well as the glaciers in the region. We will take close look of Hardeol, Rishi Phar, Safminal, Kalanka, and Changabang. After we have climbed the ridge, the Rishi tal comes into view on the other side. Slowly move down to the tal, very near to which, the glacier is flowing. Feel the massiveness of the glacier from so close up. Return back to the camp. Stay in tents.
Day 07: Bagini Camp to Upper Langatoli Camp 04 Hrs.
Well we have reached our destination and explored it. Now it is the time to get back. We have to retrace our steps. After breakfast we start our journey back and moving slowly we cover the boulder region and reach the camping site with big boulders. The camp is set up here and we have a wonderful time. Stay in tents.
Day 08: Upper Langatoli Camp to Jungle Camp 07 Hrs.
After breakfast we leave the camp and reach the bridge over the Dunagiri gad. Thereafter is the small climb to the top of the ridge to the Dunagiri village and thereafter it is all the way down to the jungle camp. Stay in tents.
Day 09: Jungle Camp to Joshimath via Ruing village 07 Hrs.
After breakfast start the walk to the Ruing village. From there we take the vehicle and in an hour’s time reach Joshimath. Stay in Hotel.
