Plan your route beforehand; do not over estimate your party’s or your own capabilities. Note compass bearings and those for bad weather escape routes. Include estimated time for each ‘leg’ on your ‘route card’ and have this handy if cloud approaches.

Another copy of your route card can be left with a reliable contact at your home, school, base, etc. In some areas it may be possible to leave written details at a local Police Station, mountain rescue post or information center, but do not expect people to want to record the route of every visitor each day! This measure must be prearranged and self canceling (unless you are overdue the route card will not be needed).
