Make sure you have a good breakfast before you set out, take something nutritious for your lunch, and always carry some emergency rations such as chocolate, glucose, dates and dried fruit which, although neither heavy nor bulky, have a high calorific value. Treat these as emergency rations and not just as an extra snack.
